How to Get Mounjaro in Japan as a Tourist
If you normally use Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and forget to bring it to Japan, run out during your trip, or need to continue treatment while staying in Japan, you may be able to receive a prescription after seeing a doctor.
At Kajiyama Internal Medicine Clinic in Kyoto, we see international travelers who would like to discuss continuing Mounjaro treatment. A face-to-face medical consultation is required, and the prescription is provided only when the doctor determines that treatment is appropriate.
Here is how the process works.
1. You need to see a doctor in Japan
Mounjaro is a prescription medicine in Japan, so it cannot simply be purchased over the counter.
International visitors can receive medical care at Japanese clinics and hospitals. Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare also provides information to help foreign visitors access medical institutions during their stay. [1]
At our clinic, consultations for travelers are face-to-face only. We do not provide online consultations for overseas travelers.
2. Tell the doctor about your current Mounjaro treatment
If you are already using Mounjaro in your home country, please tell us:
- your current dose, such as 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg or 10 mg
- how long you have been using Mounjaro
- when you took your last injection
- why Mounjaro was prescribed
- any other medicines you currently use
- any previous side effects
If available, it is helpful to bring your medication package, prescription information, medical record, or a photo showing your current medication and dose.
Japan’s Ministry of Health also recommends that travelers carrying medication have documentation explaining what medicine they use and why they use it, particularly when traveling internationally. [2]
3. The doctor will decide whether Mounjaro can be prescribed
A previous prescription from another country does not automatically mean that Mounjaro will be prescribed in Japan.
The doctor will review your current treatment, health condition, previous side effects and other medications before deciding whether continuing tirzepatide is appropriate.
Depending on your medical history, additional evaluation may be necessary.
At Kajiyama Clinic, Mounjaro supplied to patients is obtained through authorized pharmaceutical wholesalers in Japan.
4. Mounjaro for weight loss is self-pay at our clinic
In Japan, Mounjaro is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its use specifically for weight management is outside the approved indication for Mounjaro in Japan. The same active ingredient, tirzepatide, is also marketed in Japan as Zepbound for obesity treatment under its approved criteria. [3]
For international travelers receiving Mounjaro for weight-management purposes at our clinic, treatment is provided on a self-pay basis.
Our initial consultation fee is ¥2,200.
Medication prices depend on the dose and the number of boxes purchased at one time.
For current Mounjaro prices and available doses, please see our dedicated page for international travelers.

5. You can make an appointment or visit during reception hours
International travelers can make an appointment through LINE or our website, or come directly to the clinic during reception hours. Telephone appointments in English are not available because our reception staff have limited English support.
During the consultation, we can use a translation app to assist with communication.
If you have questions before visiting, contacting us through LINE is recommended.
What if I need documentation for traveling with Mounjaro?
Some countries require documentation when travelers carry prescription medicines across borders.
At Kajiyama Clinic, an English medication certificate costs ¥3,300 and is provided free of charge for purchases of ¥40,000 or more.
However, entry requirements differ by country. Before leaving Japan, check the medication import rules of your destination country.
Japan’s Ministry of Health also advises travelers to check the rules of their destination and to carry documents explaining their medications when necessary. [2]
Can I bring my own Mounjaro into Japan?
If you already have Mounjaro before traveling, different rules apply.
Japan’s Ministry of Health states that travelers may generally bring up to one month’s supply of prescription medication or pre-filled self-injection medication for personal use without an Import Confirmation, although additional rules can apply depending on the medicine and quantity. [4]
If you plan to bring more medication into Japan, check the latest Japanese import requirements before departure.
